Ezo nishiki is often considered synonymous with Yezo nishiki, but it is truly a differentiated variety. Not commonly found or correctly identified, we were lucky enough to stumble on this plant when we purchased it by a different name.
Ezo nishiki is a sturdy medium plamatum that is easily identified during a few weeks in the spring where one can see a striking red-on-red variegation in the leaves. This is visible in the first photo above and can be seen by viewing the leaf from the top or looking up through it. During this time, the leaves are still quite small and exhibit a fine pubescence on the leaf. The leaf matures to become divided 2/3 of th eway to the leaf base with graceful downward-arching lobes. Green will come through if given too much shade and cultural and environmental conditions can greatly effect the fall color. The outstanding red fall color shown above on the right is not always reliable.
